Parli Power Talks: Nominations and Elections — The Trust Behind the Ballot

A TED Talk-Style Presentation — District Three Parliamentary Education Series

Register

What actually makes an election legitimate — the outcome, or the process that got you there? Parli Power Talks: Nominations and Elections is a three-part, TED-style program from District Three’s Parliamentary Education initiative built around one organizing premise: an election’s legitimacy depends not on who wins, but on whether members believe the process was fair.

In three talks grounded in Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised, 12th Edition, you’ll discover why the way an organization chooses its leaders matters just as much as who gets chosen.

Talk One: “A Nomination Is Not an Election” exposes a distinction most organizations overlook — that putting a name forward isn’t the same as making a decision. Nominating opens the door; only a formal vote decides who walks through it.

Talk Two: “Voting Methods Matter” breaks down how voice votes, show of hands, ballots, and roll calls each shape privacy, accountability, and the honesty of the outcome — and makes the case for why contested elections demand the ballot.

Talk Three: “When the Election Goes Wrong” prepares organizations for the moment no one plans for: disputes, counting errors, eligibility challenges. The talk’s core message — having a clear process in place before the conflict is what determines whether an organization comes out the other side intact.

Together, the three talks build toward a single claim: fair process is what makes leadership legitimate. Told in an accessible, story-driven format rather than a procedural lecture, this series reframes parliamentary procedure — not as dry rule-following, but as the very thing that protects trust, voice, and democratic legitimacy inside your organization.

Because how you choose your leaders says as much as who you choose.
