The Ethical Parliamentarian in the Age of AI

Artificial intelligence can now draft minutes, summarize bylaws, generate scripts, and answer procedural questions in seconds. The question for our profession is not whether members will use these tools; they already do. The question is what professional responsibility requires when they do.. This session is not a technology demonstration and assumes no technical background, It is an examination of the ethical obligations that attach when a parliamentarian uses AI: the duty of competence when a tool produces a confident but wrong answer, the duty of confidentiality before client documents are submitted to an outside service, and the accountability that cannot be delegated to software. Grounded in the Code of Professional Responsibility for Parliamentarians, the session applies these enduring duties to a new set of tools and sends every attendee home with a practical, five-question framework for using AI responsibly at any level of practice.

​By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:
1. Evaluate where artificial intelligence tools can responsibly support parliamentary work and where reliance on them threatens the duties of competence and accuracy.
2. Apply confidentiality principles to the use of AI services, including assessing what client or organizational information may and may not be submitted to outside tools.
3. Develop standards for verifying, supervising, and taking personal responsibility for AI-assisted work product delivered to a client or organization.
