Relive the Memories From Convention

We all know the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words and that is certainly true when it comes to NAP’s national events. All convention photographs are available to view and download at parliamentarians.smugmug.com.

If you are looking for a picture of a specific individual, you can enter their name in the search box in the upper right-hand corner next to the magnifying glass, and all photos captioned with that name will be displayed. Every effort is made to accurately caption each photo, but if you find an image lacking a caption or with incorrect information, please contact Bob Williams with the image number so he can fix the error.

Photos can be also be downloaded for free. Right-click on a photo and select “save image as” to download to your computer. If you want to download a higher resolution photo just click on the picture again and click the “three overlapped square” icon in the lower right corner to select a size.

You can also view all the photos as a slide show by clicking the play button in the upper right-hand corner.

Youth Committee Chair Jan Strand, PRP, presented medals to the top three teams in parliamentary procedure at the recent Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) STAR Events Scholarship and Awards presentation. The teams are evaluated on proper use of parliamentary law, coverage of the agenda, use of the 13 ranking motions and a privileged motion, poise, clarity, team participation, and whether debate involves principles of the FCCLA mission. Both Jan and Kevin served as evaluators for the parliamentary procedure competition where 32 senior teams (10th, 11th, and 12th grade) and 25 junior teams (7th, 8th, and 9th graders) participated. They also administered the NAP membership exam to eight prospective members.

District Seven Director, Kevin Connelly, PRP, was awarded the 2017 FCCLA National STAR Events Volunteer Award. Kevin has been involved with FCCLA with evaluating and advising teams in Washington, as well as giving workshops and promoting parliamentary procedure to FCCLA chapters. He also advises the state organization on procedure for their business meetings and amending their bylaws.

Be Prepared to Debate Proposed Amendments

If you are attending the convention next month, and especially if you are a delegate, the Bylaws Committee encourages you to prepare for voting and debate on the proposed bylaws amendments by studying, and bringing with you, the Proposed Amendments Booklet. This booklet was mailed to all members with the spring issue of the National Parliamentarian and is available online.

While the booklet contains the existing language of provisions to be amended, members may wish to read some of the surrounding provisions for a better understanding of how an amendment fits within the overall document. When doing so, be aware that the bylaws document that is included in the Membership Manual inadvertently omits some language that was struck by the 2015 Convention, but with a proviso that the amendments not become effective until a date established by the newly-created Commission on Credentialing. The correct version of the existing bylaws may be accessed online.

Members also are encouraged to attend the forum on bylaws on Friday, September 8, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
